For the Potatoes

  • 2 pounds Russet Potatoes Thinly sliced.

For the Cheesy Top

  • 2 cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese Grated, can mix with Gruyère.

How to Make Au Gratin Potatoes

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Scrub and thinly slice the russet potatoes, keeping the skin on.
  • Whisk together the heavy cream, whole milk, flour, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper until smooth.
  • Butter a 2-quart baking dish and layer one-third of the potato slices, then pour one-third of the cream mixture over. Repeat until all potatoes and cream are used, finishing with cream on top.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until the edges bubble and the top is golden brown.
  • Sprinkle grated sharp cheddar cheese on top and return to the oven for another 5 minutes until melted.

Notes

Optional: Add fresh herbs like thyme or chives for additional flavor.
