Ingredients
  

For the Pasta

  • 1 cup uncooked elbow macaroni Ideal for holding onto cheese sauce.

For the Cheese Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter Adds a rich flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour Acts as a thickener.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Enhances flavors.
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Adds a hint of spice.
  • 2 cups milk Provides the liquid base.
  • 1 cup half and half Makes the sauce extra rich.
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Delivers that classic cheesy taste.

Cooking Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 325°F and grease an 8-inch square baking dish lightly.
  • Cook the elbow macaroni according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Blend in the flour, salt, and pepper, cooking for about 2 minutes.
  • Slowly whisk in the milk and half and half, cooking on medium-low heat for 5-7 minutes until thickened.
  • Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of the shredded cheese until melted.
  • Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce. Layer half of the pasta mixture into the baking dish, sprinkle 1/2 cup of cheese, then add remaining pasta and top with the rest of the cheese.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the top is golden and the cheese is melted.

Notes

Serve with a sprinkle of fresh herbs for added flavor and color.
