Ingredients
  

For the Meatballs

  • 1 lb Ground Turkey 93% lean recommended
  • 0.5 lb Italian Sausage Johnsonville mild recommended
  • 1 medium Onion Finely diced
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan Cheese Freshly grated
  • 0.5 cup Bread Crumbs Progresso Italian style preferred
  • 0.25 cup Parsley Fresh, flat-leaf preferred
  • 0.25 cup Milk Whole or low-fat
  • 2 cloves Garlic Freshly minced
  • 2 large Eggs Room temperature
  • to taste Salt & Black Pepper Essential for seasoning

For the Sauce

  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil Extra virgin preferred
  • 28 oz Crushed Tomatoes Low-sodium options if preferred
  • 15 oz Tomato Sauce Can use low-sodium
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Paste Enhances flavor
  • 1 tbsp Basil Fresh or dried

Meatball Preparation

  • Prepare Ingredients: Start by finely dicing the onion and mincing the garlic.
  • Mix Meatball Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, Italian sausage, diced onion, minced garlic, parmesan cheese, bread crumbs, parsley, milk, tomato paste, eggs, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.
  • Shape Meatballs: Preheat your oven to 425°F and lightly grease a baking sheet. Shape the mixture into 1.5 to 2-inch balls and place them on the baking sheet.
  • Bake: Bake the meatballs for 15-20 minutes until browned and they reach an internal temperature of 165°F.
  • Cook Sauce: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the diced onion until translucent, then stir in minced garlic for an additional minute.
  • Combine Sauce Ingredients: Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and basil. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  • Combine Meatballs and Sauce: Add the baked meatballs to the sauce and let them simmer together for 20-30 minutes.

Notes

Optional: Garnish with fresh basil or extra parmesan before serving.
