How to Make the Best French Toast

  • Preheat the oven: Set a wire rack on a rimmed baking sheet and preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C). This will keep your French toast warm while you cook the rest.
  • Toast the bread: Arrange the slices of white bread in a single layer on the rack and cook in the oven for about 10 minutes, turning once until they are lightly toasted.
  • Mix the custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, kosher salt, ground cinnamon, freshly grated nutmeg, vanilla extract, and whole milk until everything is well combined.
  • Cook the first slices: Heat 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter in a large non-stick or cast iron skillet over medium heat. Soak 2 slices of bread in the egg mixture, turning until fully saturated. Add the soaked slices to the skillet and cook for about 3 minutes, or until browned on the bottom side.
  • Finish cooking: Sprinkle the top side with sugar, flip the slices, and continue to cook for another 3 minutes, swirling occasionally, until the second side is beautifully browned.
  • Keep warm: Transfer the cooked French toast to the rack in the oven to keep warm. Repeat this process with the remaining slices of bread and custard mixture.
  • Serve warm: Once all the slices are cooked, serve your French toast with pats of butter and a generous drizzle of maple syrup.

Notes

Optional: Sprinkle with fresh berries or add a dollop of whipped cream for an extra treat.
