Instructions

How to Make Naan Bread

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, instant dry yeast, sugar, anise seeds (if using), and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the plain yogurt, extra-virgin olive oil, and warm water. Mix well.
  • Stir the wet ingredients into the dry mixture until a shaggy dough begins to form. Knead gently on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes.
  • Cover the bowl with a warm cloth and place it in a warm spot for 1 to 1½ hours, or until the dough has doubled in size.
  • Gently punch the dough down to release the air. Divide into six equal portions and shape each into a ball.
  • Preheat your skillet over medium-high heat until hot.
  • Roll each dough ball into a ⅛-inch thick oval.
  • Place the rolled dough in the skillet. Cook until bubbles form and the bottom is golden-brown (about 1-2 minutes). Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  • Brush the cooked naan with melted salted butter and wrap in a clean towel to keep warm.

Notes

To enjoy freshly warmed naan, reheat in an oven wrapped in foil at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes.
