Ingredients
  

For the Bread Base

  • 1 to 1.5 loaves French Bread sliced to ¾ inch pieces

For the Syrup

  • 2 cups Water
  • 2 cones Piloncillo Cones or brown sugar
  • 2 sticks Cinnamon Sticks
  • 2 cloves Whole Cloves

For the Mix-Ins

  • ½ cup Raisins
  • ½ cup Pecan Pieces
  • ¼ to ½ cup Shredded Coconut optional

Optional Additions

  • Sliced Bananas for a fruity twist
  • Cheese for a rich, creamy element

Instructions
 

How to Make Capirotada

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Slice French bread into ¾ inch pieces and arrange on a baking sheet. Toast for 15 minutes until lightly golden.
  • In a saucepan, combine 2 cups of water, 2 cones of piloncillo (or brown sugar), 2 cinnamon sticks, and 2 whole cloves. Heat until thickened, about 15 minutes. Remove cinnamon and cloves.
  • In a 13x9 baking dish, layer toasted bread, ¼ cup raisins, ¼ cup pecans, and half the coconut, then pour over ¾ cup of syrup.
  • Add another layer of bread followed by remaining raisins, pecans, and coconut. Reserve ¼ cup syrup for serving.
  • Bake for 15 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the syrup.
  • Serve warm or chilled, drizzling with extra syrup for sweetness.

Notes

Capirotada is best served warm. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
