Instructions

How to Make King Cake

  • In a mixer, combine granulated sugar, salt, and melted butter. Add eggs and mix well until everything is combined and creamy.
  • Warm the milk slightly and mix it with the yeast, letting it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Add in vanilla, orange zest, lemon zest, and flour. Mix until a soft dough ball forms. Knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Coat the dough with canola oil, cover it with a kitchen towel, and allow it to rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1.5 hours.
  • In separate bags, toss granulated sugar with food coloring until evenly colored.
  • Roll the dough into a rectangle, brush it with oil, and sprinkle a generous layer of cinnamon sugar over the top. Cut into strips, braid, and shape into a circle.
  • Let the braided dough rest on a parchment-lined baking sheet, covered lightly, until doubled again, about 1 hour.
  • Preheat your oven to 370°F. Bake the cake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and a bit of milk until smooth. Drizzle it over your cooled cake.
  • Sprinkle the colored sugars alternately over the glaze. Slice, serve, and enjoy!

Notes
