  • 4 cups All-Purpose Flour Swap for whole wheat for a heartier loaf

Instructions
 

Making Soda Bread

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (210°C).
  • Combine the flour, salt, and baking soda in a large bowl.
  • Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Whisk together the egg and buttermilk in a separate jug.
  • Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in ¾ of the liquid mixture. Gently stir until a soft dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Shape it into a round about 8 inches wide.
  • Score a deep cross on top of the dough and poke holes in the corners with a knife.
  • Glaze the surface with the remaining buttermilk.
  • Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 400°F (200°C) and bake for an additional 30 minutes.
  • Cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with Irish butter or your favorite jam for best flavor. Adjust ingredients to customize for dietary needs.
