Method

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Start by greasing a 9x13-inch baking dish with salted butter.
  • Layer half of the sliced baguette evenly on the bottom of your greased baking dish.
  • Add half of the thinly sliced deli ham on top of the baguette layer, followed by half of the shredded gruyère cheese.
  • Repeat the layering process with the remaining baguette, ham, and cheese.
  • Whisk together the large eggs, whole milk, half-and-half, Dijon mustard, thyme, kosher salt, ground black pepper, all-purpose flour, and a pinch of nutmeg in a large bowl.
  • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered ingredients in the baking dish, ensuring all the bread is soaked nicely.
  • Refrigerate the casserole for at least one hour, or preferably overnight.
  • Bake for about 45-50 minutes or until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
  • Garnish with additional chopped chives before serving, if desired.
