Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 1 packet Active Dry Yeast or Instant Yeast Choose active dry yeast for a delightful fermentation process or instant yeast for quick preparation.
  • 1 cup Lukewarm Water Hydrates the yeast effectively; adjust this amount if you're in a particularly humid or dry climate.
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil Infuses rich flavor; feel free to substitute with any neutral oil like vegetable or canola oil if preferred.
  • 3 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour Provides the perfect structure and tenderness; consider a gluten-free flour blend for those with dietary restrictions.
  • 1 teaspoon Table Salt Enhances the flavor and controls yeast activity for the ideal rise.

Optional for Flavor

  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder Adds an enticing aroma and extra flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian Herbs Mix in some dried oregano or basil for a flavorful crust.

Instructions

How to Make Pizza Crust

  • Activate Yeast: If using active dry yeast, dissolve it in lukewarm water with a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 15 minutes until bubbly and frothy.
  • Combine Ingredients: Mix the activated yeast with flour, salt, olive oil, and the remaining water in a large bowl.
  • Knead Dough: On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for 4-5 minutes until it's smooth and elastic.
  • First Rise: Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise until puffy (about 1 hour for instant yeast or 90 minutes for active dry yeast).
  • Refrigeration (optional): For better flavor, let the dough rise for 45 minutes, then refrigerate it for 4-24 hours.
  • Shape Pizza: Decide on the pizza size and thickness according to your preference. Shape the dough and leave it to rest for a few minutes.
  • Prepare Pan: Grease your pizza pan with olive oil, then press the dough evenly to the edges.
  • Final Rise: Allow the shaped dough to rise covered for another 90 minutes (without refrigeration) or 2-2.5 hours (after refrigeration).
  • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  • Bake: Bake the crust until it’s set and lightly browned, then add toppings and bake until the cheese is melted.

Notes

For a crispier crust, consider preheating your baking pan or pizza stone. Store leftover crust in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
