Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1 box Vanilla Cake Mix Provides structure and a sweet base; substitute with homemade vanilla cake if preferred.
  • 2 sticks Butter, softened Adds richness and moisture; use margarine for a dairy-free option.

For the Frosting

  • 4 cups Powdered Sugar For sweetness and creating frosting; ensure it’s sifted for a smoother texture.
  • 1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract Enhances flavor profile; almond extract can be a flavorful substitute.
  • 1/4 cup Heavy Cream Adds creaminess to frosting; milk can be used for a lighter alternative.
  • 1 pinch Kosher Salt Balances sweetness; table salt can suffice in a pinch.

For Colorful Decoration

  • Food Coloring (Green, brown, blue, yellow, violet) Creates vibrant hues for decor; gel colors are recommended for bright results.

Instructions

Baking Instructions

  • Prepare the Batter: Start by following the instructions on the box vanilla cake mix. Add your softened butter and mix until the batter is smooth and creamy. This should take about 2-3 minutes of mixing.
  • Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the batter into a lined cupcake pan and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. You'll want them to look lightly golden.
  • Cool the Cupcakes: Once baked, remove the cupcakes from the oven and let them cool in the pan for about 5 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Make the Frosting: In a mixing bowl, whip together the softened butter and sifted powdered sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes. Gradually add the heavy cream and vanilla extract, mixing until you reach your desired frosting consistency.
  • Color the Frosting: Divide the frosting into portions and add food coloring to each. Mix until you achieve vibrant colors, being sure to wear gloves to avoid staining your hands.
  • Pipe the Frosting: Using a piping bag, creatively pipe the colored frosting onto each cooled cupcake. Feel free to experiment with different color combinations and designs to make them truly unique!

Notes

Optional: Sprinkle edible glitter on top for extra sparkle! Ensure butter for frosting is at room temperature for easier mixing. Don't overmix the cake batter to avoid dense cupcakes. Use gel food coloring for vibrant hues. Let cupcakes cool completely before frosting.
